One year after movie star Joseph Strike swept schoolteacher Alice off her feet, they are spending Christmas together in snowy Cambridge. But despite the romantic setting Alice can’t help but question whether life in the spotlight is really what she wants. Will a Christmas provide some perspective? Or will the life she’d be leaving behind be too much to lose?
There are only a handful of authors whose books I jump at the chance to read the moment they reach the shelves and Paige Toon is at the very top of that list. I have read every single one of her books throughout her incredible writing career and so when I discovered that she was putting together a collection of short stories together, I knew that it would be yet another incredible year.
“Then he takes my face in his hands and kisses me, while camera flashes go off over our heads.”
The collection of short stories begins with One Perfect Christmas; focusing on world famous Joseph Strike and his very private, secret girlfriend, local primary school teacher Alice. I can recall reading their original story, One Perfect Summer a few years ago and I just completely fell in love with everything that Paige created for them. Joseph is a character who you can’t help but enjoy and as for Alice, she’s one of my all-time favourite female leads in Paige’s books. This is one of the stories which I have previously read on my Kindle but it was so nice to go back, relive the lives of two favourites and just soak up the festive period.
“The devastation in his eyes as he stares back at me says it all.”
All of Paige’s short stories feature characters who readers have previously met and I can’t deal you how much fun it was to read about them all again. My personal favourites were Johnny’s Girl, When Lily Met Alice and of course, Laura’s Longest Day. All of the short stories were written to absolute perfection but I was overly excited to revisit Laura and Leo from The Longest Holiday as that is by far, my favourite chick-lit novel of all time.
“It has been the longest time, but my heart is finally where it’s meant to be home.”
During the Christmas period, everyone needs a light-hearted book in which they can settle down with during the cold days when you’re in a food coma. Paige has always been one of my favourite authors and this collection of short stories proves exactly why as she is a force to be reckoned with. Her books are so full of incredible descriptions, her characters are filled to the brim with personality and you will most definitely want to cancel your festive plans as you won’t be able to put any of her books down.
This is a fantastic gift for anyone this Christmas – reader or not, chick-lit fan or not, everyone will enjoy One Perfect Christmas and Other Stories…
